# As AI agents reshape the web, Google opens Gemini and Search to more apps

Google is opening its Connected Apps Platform, letting any business or developer submit apps that can be used across its AI experiences in Search and Gemini. Connected apps let users securely link and interact with third-party services and then take actions, such as designing a flyer in Canva or building a playlist in YouTube Music. Google already has over 50 Connected Apps available in Gemini, and these will come to Google Search over the next few weeks. Developers integrate with a cloud-hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server or Android MCP using the AppFunctions APIs, then register, test, and submit their app through the Google Connected Console. They can choose whether the app is available via Search, the Gemini app, or both, and can track traffic, latency, and error rates while controlling their brand identity. The platform is in public preview for U.S. developers, with no broad availability date yet.

## Why It Matters

Google's move is an early attempt to define the "agentic web," where users reach services through an AI provider rather than launching individual apps. By standardizing on MCP and opening a console for any developer, Google is building the plumbing for [agents and autonomy](../agents-autonomy.md) to act across many products. This is the kind of infrastructure that could shift how consumers and businesses discover and use services, linking to the encyclopedia's coverage of [frontier labs](../frontier-labs.md), [agents, autonomy, and tool use](../agents-autonomy.md), and [human–AI interaction](../human-ai-interaction.md). It also echoes the connected-apps approaches of ChatGPT and Meta's Muse, making the pattern a defining feature of the agentic era.
